On Thursday, June 27th 2024 at HCC’s Heinien Theater, the H-Town Orchestra, Opera, and Theater Company through Jampac Entertainment put on the production of Once on This Island…As Told by the Gods! This version of Once on This Island: As told by the Gods! excluded all human characters, creating a one-on-one storytime and reggae jam session between the “gods” and the audience! One of the four “gods” was Agwe, played by Bruce Parhams. Here is a bit more info on understanding Agwe’s spiritual essence, and the correlations between Agwe and His older depiction, the Orisa Olokun.

When we sing “Wade in the Water,” we are singing to the spirits The Most High God placed in the sea. Nature based faiths are specific about the names of those spirits. There are many names for water spirits, including Yemoja(YAY-MOH-JAH), Mami Wata(MOMMY-WAH-TAH), Olokun(OH-LOW-KOON), and Agwe (AHG-WAY).

People who lived on islands like the setting of Once on this Island did much to appease the water “gods.” This was because so much of their lives depended on harmony and favor from the waters. Harmony with the water “gods” was essential for food in the forms of fishing and watering crops. Mercy and favor from the water “gods” served as protection from floods, droughts, and storms like the one that collided Ti Moune and Daniel.

It is believed that when storms come, the water gods are watering crops, and/or angry about something that they wish to wash away. It was Agwe who saved Ti Moune from the storm as a baby.

In the Haitian Vodou Tradition, That water “god’s” name is Agwe. In Orisa tradition, Agwe is closely correlated to the Masculine form of Olokun. In some beliefs, Olokun is female. In Agwe’s case, not so.

Olokun is the god of the deeper parts of the sea, or the underwater kingdom. Internally, Olokun’s essence reminds us all of the inner treasures and wisdom, that we bury under the waters our deepest emotions. Agwe(Olokun) represents wisdom, strong intuition, and long wealth in the form of male provision!

""

Olokun is the waters that swallowed the Titanic, kept Noah’s Ark afloat, and pocketed Atlantis. He pairs with Oya(changes, transformations, storms) for larger water storms like tsunamis and monsoons. Ever wondered why we sing God’s gonna trouble the water? So the treasures God put at the bottom of our seas can rise to the top!
